Our Visit to the Crime Lab

Inspector Sgt. Joe met us at the Crime Lab and gave us an exciting tour! We came prepared and took notes. |
It was the morning of Tuesday, July11, 2006. We arrived at the
We went outside and got on a little yellow school bus which was our ride to the Crime Lab. During the ride to the Crime Lab we ate our granola bars and some people drank their juice. We took digital pictures of each other while we were on the bus, which we have used for our web pages.

We arrived at the Crime Lab (officially known as the New York City Police Department Forensic Investigation Division which has the famous "Crime Scene Unit") located at 150-14 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, New York City. The ride took about 20 minutes from our community center. When we arrived we had to sign ourselves in and get a sticker with our names on it. That allowed us to enter.

We were met by o ur tour guide named Joe. He is a Detective Sergeant for the NYPD (NY Police Department). He took us to the water room where we sat and heard an introduction about the Crime Lab. The room is called the "water room" because that is where they store all the bottled water for the entire year. That's a lot of water! There were lots of big bottles there, but also chairs where we could sit and listen comfortably.

We sat in the “water room” for about an hour. We learned a lot and got some background information about what we were going to see on the tour of the Crime Lab (five floors!). We learned about finger prints. We also learned about the ridges on our finger tips. Without ridges we can't pick up things. These ridges show our finger prints when we touch things. We learned that there's a black and a white powder that could be used to see finger prints that are latent. This means that they can not be seen. Ridges are found on your foot, ears, nose, lips, and fingers. Not every one leaves finger prints. Some people don't leave finger prints because they wear gloves. The best finger prints are on things that are smooth. When you leave a finger print on something it is sweat that you're leaving behind. You could see finger prints on a gun, but it's hard to see. We also learned that we should not take drugs and not to touch a gun. Some of the accidents with guns were dangers. For example, some of the people were injured very badly, even killed. We learned about D.N.A. Now we know that D.N.A. is what we are made up of and can tell just about everything about us.
